Sri Lanka'S First "Green Clothing Factory" Put Into Operation

A technological renovation garment factory near Colombo, Sri Lanka, was put into operation on 25.

Compared with the original plant, the new plant can save energy by 45%, save water 60%, and reduce carbide emissions by 75%, making it the first "green factory" in Sri Lanka.


Sri Lanka's largest clothing exporter, brandex group, "leisure clothing factory" located in the northeast of Colombo about 35 kilometers of the West Duwar area, covers an area of 130 thousand square feet (about 12 thousand square meters).

John Pillay, general manager of the group, said that the company carried out a technical renovation of the 30 year old factory for 10 months and cost 2 million 500 thousand US dollars.

The contents include: adjusting the piping and air conditioning system of the factory, installing a porous glass which is light and not hot, and redesigning the steam boiler and steam conveying system, which reduces the power consumption of the factory by 45%.

In terms of water use, the factory has adopted the water recycling system, rainwater collection system and filtration disinfection system. The toilet flushing water and garden watering water from the factory come from circulating water, which reduces the total water consumption of the factory by 60%.

In addition, the factory has achieved zero discharge of solid waste by recycling waste.


Ash Rolf Omar, chief executive of brandex group, said that in the next 4 years, the group will invest $25 million to continue its ecological pformation and strive to reduce its carbide emissions by at least 35% by 2012.
